The Rooster Crows – August 6, 2010

Although spring wheat is no longer king on the northern plains, those farmers who still plant it are in the process of harvesting another good crop, in some cases producing yields as good or better than last year’s record numbers.  Production reports running from 50 to 90 bushels to the acre have been received, and the quality is reported to be excellent as well, with test weights of 61 to 62 pounds and protein of 14 to 15 percent being the norm.  Even the price isn’t bad and, when combined with production and quality, makes this year’s crop about like winning the tri-fecta at the track.  Another .4 of an inch of rain on Sunday morning, August 1, and high humidity at the beginning of the week slowed harvest activities somewhat, but most were cutting at a steady pace by Wednesday.  Well, there’s one bad thing about a good crop with a good price – you know it has to get worse after that.  Bummer!

Earl & Renee Cramton of this community joined their son, Jim, and his fiancé, Piper, on a camping trip to Bowstring Lake, north of Deer River in northern Minnesota, from Monday, July 26, through Thursday, July 29.  During the trip, the Cramtons slept in a tent, endured some rain and survived in fine shape, reports Renee.

Doug & Shar (Breker) Spieker of West Fargo hosted a reunion of Doug’s Navy comrades at the old Clarence Breker  farmstead in Tewaukon Township from Thursday, July 29 through Sunday, August 1.  The Spiekers served a barbecued beef supper for friends and family at the farm on Saturday, July 31.  Guests also enjoyed the music of Peder Gulleson and “Geneseo Straight” throughout the evening.  Doug and his former shipmates usually get together every year, and several have visited in Rutland in past years.  This year, though, they decided to make Rutland their destination, rather than their starting point.  The Rutland community welcomes them, and thanks them for their service to our country.

Another couple known by many in this community, Don & Joyce Murack, were honored with a 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration at the Cayuga Hall on Saturday, July 31.  Guests were treated to a supper and a dance, with the music provided by the perennially popular Albert Mikesh.  Congratulations to Don & Joyce on their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

Larry & Dianna Anderson and Dick & Bonnie Anderson of Rutland drove up to the Minnesota lake home of Roger & Janice (Anderson) Lee last Friday, July 30, for a weekend family reunion of the descendants of the late Roy & Helen Anderson of this community.  Roger and Janice now make their home at Buffalo Lake MN, just north of Detroit Lakes.  Larry reports that 32 first, second, third and fourth generation descendants gathered for the event.

Riley Brothers Construction of Morris MN, subcontractors for Morris Seal Coat and Trucking, completed patching work on the City’s streets on the afternoon of Monday, August 2.  Damaged portions of pavement were milled out, and the areas filled in with hot asphalt paving material.  According to City Engineer Les Norton, the patched areas should cure for a week to 10 days before the seal coat is applied.

At 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 12, and Friday, August 13, the stage lights in the Rutland Town Hall will go on, the house lights will go down and the curtain will part on Entertainment Unlimited’s 2010 Children’s Summer Theater production of “Occupation Murder.”  Brady Haussler of this community, an actor of talent in several past Summer Theater and Community Club productions, is making his debut as Executive Producer and Director of this year’s effort, the 15th consecutive year for the Summer acting program.  The play is a murder mystery, full of action, suspense and a surprise twist at the end that will have the audience on the edge of its seats.  Box office will be open at 6:00 and the public is urged to attend.  Past performances have been outstanding, and this year’s effort promises to be no exception.

The Rutland City Council met at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 2, in the City Office, with Mayor Narum, Auditor Hoistad, and Aldermen Arneson, Mahrer and Siemieniewski in attendance.  Alderman Christianson was absent.  Also present were: Deb Banish; Taryn Maloney; Shane Jensen; and, Bill Anderson.  The financial report showed all funds to be in the black, except the sewer operating fund which is still recovering from a major sewer lagoon repair bill from last Spring.  The Council accepted Mr. Shane Jensen’s offer to purchase the City’s WD-45 Allis-Chalmers tractor for $2,000.00.  The tractor had formerly been used for mowing, but has been parked for the past 3 years, since the old mower wore out.  Council members also approved payment of $22,000.00 to Maguire Iron of Sioux Falls for maintenance work on the municipal water tower and tank, including the application of an epoxy coating to the interior of the tank.  The entire system, including the tower and tank, cost $59,000.00 when it was installed back in 1954.  Five building permits had been forwarded to the Council by the Planning & Zoning Board, with a recommendation that they be approved: Vern Liest will be attaching an addition to his back yard storage building; Kris Nerison is building a deck on her house at the corner of Gay & Dakota Streets; Brad & Heidi Siemieniewski are building a deck on their house at the west end of Arthur Street; and Kathy Brakke is putting a deck on the house at 116 Dakota Street and a covered porch on the residence at 105 Dakota.  The Council unanimously adopted a resolution approving the issuance of $189,000.00 in municipal improvement bonds to pay for the street repair and resealing project now ongoing.  They also tentatively scheduled the election on the City’s proposed Home Rule Charter to be held in conjunction with the General Election in November. In other action, the Council approved a raffle permit for the Jesse Brakke benefit to be held in the Town Hall on September 11; and, authorized the Rutland Rib-Fest Committee to close 1 block of Main Street, from Front Street south to Gay Street, on Saturday, August 14, for the event.  Rib stands and other attractions, including live music,  will be located on the street.  Deb Banish reviewed plans for getting the City’s records for past years into the newly acquired computer system with the Council.  Deb will be working with Auditor Hoistad in making the transition from the old system to the new.  The next Rutland City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 7, due to the Labor Day holiday on the first Monday of the month.

A committee of local volunteers is working on a Benefit event to be held here on Saturday, September 11, 2010, at the Rutland Town Hall.  The event is a fund raiser for the benefit of Jesse Brakke who underwent heart transplant surgery on February 2 of this year.  Anyone who would like to donate auction or raffle items should contact Greg Donaldson at 680-0591 or 724-6266;  Janelle Brakke at 724-3391; or Deborah Banish at retmom@yahoo.com.   The benefit events will feature a supper, raffles, silent auction and live auction.

The Rutland Sportsmen’s Club’s Annual Youth Day is coming up on Sunday, August 15, at the club’s grounds north of Silver Lake.  Youthful participants will receive instruction in handling firearms, as well as pointers on fishing and archery during the event.  The event is co-sponsored by The Rutland Sportmen’s Club, the Windy Mound Chapter of the Wild Turkey Federation and the Sargent County Chapter of Pheasants Forever.

Attendance was sparse when State Sen. Tracy Potter, Dem-NPL candidate for the U. S. Senate seat being vacated by fellow Democrat Byron Dorgan, spoke at the Sargent County Courthouse in Forman last Sunday.  Sen. Potter spoke briefly on the history of Sargent County and the Sargent County Courthouse, and discussed his views on the major issues now facing North Dakota and the nation.  He said that Sargent County’s was the 26th Courthouse he has visited in fulfilling his pledge to speak at the steps of every one of North Dakota’s 53 County Courthouses.  He has found, though, that 4 of the State’s Courthouses have no steps, so he just spoke at the front entrance.  At this point, there seems to be little interest in the upcoming political campaign, with voter apathy being the rule.  Even the Tea Partyers have taken time off from protesting government spending to enjoy the lake homes they have purchased with their government payments.

Well, that’s it for this week.  For more information about Rutland and Rutland folks, check out the community’s internet web site at www.rutlandnd.com.  Stop by the Rutland blog and Facebook pages, too, while you’re surfing the net.  Later.
