The Rooster Crows – October 8, 2010

The sun was barely above the eastern horizon when the runners and walkers were toeing the mark at the starting line for the First Annual Uffda Day 5-K Run/Walk at 8:00 o’clock on the morning of Sunday, October 3, Uffda Day 2010 in Rutland. Nineteen runners and walkers, ranging in age from 8 to 72,competed in the event, which had been organized by Uffda Day 2010 Chairperson Lori McLaen.  The winners of the Inaugural Uffda Day 5K event were as follows: Overall, Top Female and Winner of the 40-49 age Group-Carmin Wade, Amherst SD, with a time of 25:31.056; Second Place, Top Male and Winner of the 50-59 age Group-Scott Gail, Fargo ND, with a time of 28:40.145; Third Place and Winner of the Teen age group-Hailey Hamilton, Havana/Rutland ND, with a time of 29:32.140; Winner of the 30-39 age group was Kenny Hamilton, Havana/Rutland ND, with a time of 30:45.928; Winner of the PreTeen age group was Nate Gulsvig, Fargo ND, with a time of 36:27.571; Winner of the 60-69 age group was Bill Anderson, Rutland ND, with a walking time of 1:01:56.770; and, Winner of the 70-79 age group was E. Jerome Ness, Amherst SD, with a walking time of 1:01:57.722.  There were 11 participants from North Dakota, 6 from South Dakota and 2 from Minnesota.  The day had dawned clear, with a brisk breeze from the south, and by the time the last 5-K participants crossed the finish line, at the intersection of First and Cooper Streets, arts and crafts vendors were setting up and opening up for the day and Uffda Day 2010, Rutland’s 26th annual Fall festival, was underway.  By the time the American Legion Color Guard from Bergman-Evenson Post #215 led the Uffda Day Parade down Main Street at 1:00 o’clock, another large crowd, estimated at 2,500 to 3,000, was on hand for fun, food and frolic.  Another first-time Uffda Day event was the wine tasting sponsored by the North Dakota Grape Growers Association.  Prairiewood Winery of Elliot ND and Red Trail Winery of Buffalo ND had booths set up in the dining room of the Lariat Bar, and both report a very successful day.  The old Lariat Bar building, now at the corner of First and Arthur Streets, was the center of action for Wolfie The Clown and a number of activities for kids of all ages.  Keith Hoistad of Milnor and Neil Olerud of McLeod had teams and wagons on hand to provide recreational rides and transportation around town.  The street from the Sargent County Bank corner to the Legion Hall had been blocked off for the car show and the exhibition of the antique tractors of the Wild Rice Antique Tractor & Plowing Association.  As usual, Dave & Pat Bladow did an outstanding job of organizing a fascinating collection of antique and classic automobiles.  Throughout the day, music, food, demonstrations and displays, coupled with a beautiful, sunny day, made the event a festive one.  The Rutland Community Club, Uffda Day Chairperson McLaen and all of the committee leaders and workers are to be commended for making the 26th Annual Uffda Day another unqualified success.  Come on back next year, on the first Sunday in October 2011, for the 27th.

Mike & Vonda Prindiville of Richland WA visited at the Prindiville farm here from Thursday, September 30, to Monday, October 4.  A 1954 graduate of RHS, Mike had not been back to the old home town for several years.  He was pleased and impressed with the improvements to Main Street, and even took in a session with the Assembled Wise Men at the Round Table in the General Store on Friday afternoon.  The Prindivilles plan to be heading back to Washington by way of Williston, Vonda’s home town.

Anne Hoflen of Paw Paw IL visited friends and family here from Wednesday, September 22, to Wednesday, October 5.  Anne is one of the daughters of the late Ted and Margaret Hoflen of this community, and a 1966 graduate of Sargent Central High School.  While here, Anne helped out with Uffda Day preparations and rolled lefse for the demonstration at the Seniors’ Center during the event.  She serves as the Pastor of the Methodist Church in Paw Paw, which is straight west of Chicago and straight south of Madison WI.

Some of the Uffda Day visitors to Rutland on Sunday, October 3, were: Dorothy (Westra) Olson and daughter of Webster SD; Shirley Mahrer of Hankinson; Jerry & Mona Kelsh of Fullerton ND; Lee & Lin Deutscher of Wolverton MN; Merle Boucher of Rollette ND; Dan & Bea Faust of Valley City; Lee & Cynthia Kaldor of Mayville ND; Clarence & Sharon Sundlie of Fargo; Mike & Vonda Prindiville of Richland WA; Maxine (Pearson) Harms of Breckenridge; Arden & Marilyn Anderson and Sonja (Anderson) Christensen of Wahpeton; Brad Crabtree of Ashley; Joel Susag of Fargo; David Susag of Fargo; Mary Ann Gadberry of Fort Ransom; Jim Dotzenrod of Wyndmere; John Sundlie of Green Bay WI; Judie (Anderson) Seavert of Fairmount ND; Stephanie (Seavert) Watkins of Rogers MN; Curtis Bradbury of Bismarck; Mark & Carrie Springer of Bismarck; Doris & Carl Olson of Britton SD; Betty (Kulzer) Johnson of Gwinner; Joyce (Colby) Narum of Fergus Falls MN; Sheila (Narum) Olson and daughters of Lisbon; Rusty Silseth and Jenny Neal of Becker MN; and, many, many more.

Rusty Silseth took in the car show at Uffda Day on Sunday, and some of the older autos brought back some memories.  Rusty recalled that back in the early 1940’s, he owned a 1934 Ford V-8 coupe with a rumble seat, and that he, Orvis Pearson, Al Colby, Jerry Prindiville, Ray Erickson and 6 girls from Rutland all piled into that little car and drove over to  the Bowery at Lake Tewaukon for a Saturday night dance.  Rusty recalled that he, Orvis and 3 girls were inside the car, 3 girls were in the rumble seat and Ray, Al and Jerry rode on the fenders all the way out to the Lake.  Orvis remembered that the Ford’s chassis was right down on the axles during that trip.  It seemed like a good idea at the time, Rusty, Orvis & Ray recalled, but, on reflection was probably not an example of good judgment that would have made their parents proud.  Both Rusty and Ray were shy back then, a condition from which they are still helping each other recover, they say.

Another week of warm dry weather has allowed harvest to proceed at full speed.  Huge combines taking 40 foot cuts are gobbling up the 2010 soybean crop at a break-neck pace.  Yield reports are anywhere from good to outstanding, ranging from 30 to 50 bushels per acre.  With the price hanging in there at $9.00 to $10.00 per bushel, it’s hard to suppress the smiles.  Some corn has also been cut, with Harris Anderson reporting that Wade Anderson began harvesting some corn in Weber Township on Saturday that came off the combine at 14.2% moisture, dry enough to put in the bin.  There were no yield reports for corn, yet,  but initial results look promising.

Randy Pearson reports that he has completed the harvest of his soybean crop in Shuman and Ransom Townships, and is now assisting his son-in-law, Tyler Speich, bring in his crop in the northeastern part of the County.

The Assembled Wise Men received a sure sign that the economy is on the upswing on Monday afternoon, when Jack Brummond stopped by the Rutland General Store to join in the discussion during the 3:00 o’clock shift at the Round Table, and bought lunch for those in attendance.  Yes, you read it right, Jack bought!  The Wise Men who were present wish to thank Jack for his generosity.  The Wise Men who were not present wish to invite him back for another opportunity.  The crop near Havana has looked good all year, and now we know – it really was as good as it looked.  Thanks, Jack.

The Rutland City Council met at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 4, in the Rutland Town Hall with Mayor Narum, Auditor Hoistad, Alderwoman Siemieniewski, Alderman Christianson and Alderman Mahrer present.  Alderman Arneson was absent.  The financial report showed all funds to be in the black, except the sewer operating fund which is still recovering from some major repair expenses incurred last Spring.  The sewer operating fund is now down only a few hundred dollars, and should be back in the black before year’s end.  The only major item of business to be transacted was the final approval of the 2011 Budget.  A budget projecting total revenues and expenditures of $45,160.00 was approved.  The next meeting of the Rutland City Council is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 1, in the Rutland City Hall.

This community was saddened last week when word was received here that Rutland native Harriet (Carlson) Pherson had passed away in Fargo at the age of 76 years.  Harriet was the youngest child, and the only daughter, of the late Art & Gertrude Carlson of this community.  She was a 1952 graduate of Rutland High School.  She married Ernest Pherson of Rutland in the early 50’s, and they resided in Fargo, where both were employed.  She is survived by: one son, Leon, of Fargo; one daughter, Barbara Drake of Waco, Nebraska; one brother, Frank, of Bismarck; and, by a number of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and 2 brothers.  The funeral for Harriet Pherson was at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 5, in Nordland Lutheran Church with Pastor Katy Jerabek officiating.  The Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo, was in charge of arrangements.  Burial was in the Rutland Cemetery.  The Rutland community extends its sympathy to the family and friends of Harriet Pherson.

Bergman-Evenson Post #215 of The American Legion will be serving a pancake & sausage breakfast/brunch/lunch from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday 10/10/10 in the Rutland Town Hall.  These pancakes are made with the Post’s secret recipe that gives shy persons the strength to get out and do what needs to be done.  Post Commander Larry Christensen states that funds raised will be used to support the Post’s activities in the community.  The Post is also planning a Flag Retirement Ceremony to be held on the afternoon of Veterans’ Day, November 11.  Anyone who has soiled, worn or damaged American Flags in need of proper retirement and disposal may bring them to the pancake breakfast on October 10, or contact any member of Post #215 prior to Veterans’ Day.

Ione Pherson and Shelly Pherson of this community took the afternoon off on Wednesday, October 6, and went horseback riding up in the Fort Ransom area.  Ione reports that the weather was beautiful, and that the Sheyenne River Valley in the area of Fort Ransom State Park was resplendent with Fall colors.  Congratulations to Ione & Shelly for taking time to smell the roses, and enjoy the colors, while they may.

The sharptail grouse season opened back on September 11; the resident waterfowl season opened on September 24th; pheasant season opens up on Saturday, October 9; and the 2010 deer season is coming up in November.  There’s one more season that’s about to open up that will continue until next Spring – the 2010 flu season.  During the flu season, the successful participant is the one who doesn’t get any, and Flu shots are now available to help ensure a successful season for Sargent County residents.  Sargent County Health Department Director Colleen Sundquist reports that flu shots will be available in Milnor Senior Center on Wednesday, October 6; in Forman at the Sargent County Health Department’s Main Street  office on Thursday, October 7; at the Havana Legion Hall on Friday, October 8; at the Gwinner Community Center on Monday, October 11; at the Cogswell  Community Center on Wednesday, October 13; and, at the Rutland Senior Center on Wednesday, October 20.  All of these clinics are in the mornings, most from 9:30 – 12:30.  Flu shots can also be obtained, by appointment, at the Sargent County Health Department’s office on Main Street in Forman.  The phone # there is 724-3725.  An ounce of prevention is still worth a pound of cure, and, since there is no cure for the flu except to suffer through it, a flu shot this Fall could spare you and yours several days of misery this coming Winter.

Jim & Mary Breker were in Rochester MN during the recent heavy rains and flooding in southern Minnesota.  Jim reports 8 to 10 inches of rain throughout the area.  Rivers flooded and blocked roads, requiring detours that slowed down traffic and resulted in a lot of lost motorists and truckers who weren’t familiar with the back country of southern Minnesota.  In some smaller towns the number of emergency personnel and vehicles caused additional traffic jams, Jim stated. The Brekers were in Rutland on Uffda Day and Jim got a lot of help getting over being bashful.

The Rutland General Store is taking reservations for a 6 course gourmet dinner planned for the evening of Friday, October 22.  The main course will be beef cordon bleu, says proprietor Gretchen Vann.  The General Store serves several gourmet meals throughout the year, each with a theme, and this one, the Harvest Special, will feature fresh produce of the harvest season.  The General Store has also made a change in its morning schedule, and is now opening at 6:00 a.m. to accommodate hunters and harvesters.  For more information about the Rutland General Store, check out the Store’s internet web site at rutlandgeneralstore.com.
